  7.     The rumor of a character's imminent death had sailed around
  8. for weeks, but that didn't lessen the shock for thirtysomething
  9. fans when the event occurred. Aficionados anxiously awaited
  10. last week's show to hear the result of Nancy's cancer
  11. treatment, but there was a surprise: Michael's best friend Gary
  12. was killed in a tragic highway pileup. Actor Peter Horton, who
  13. portrays Gary, didn't object to his death, since it frees him
  14. to pursue work as a director. "On the head side, it was the
  15. right thing to happen," he says. "But the heart gets sad for
  16. all sorts of reasons."
